A central telephone system, a “switch,” manages your telephone calls.

When you call someone, the switch sends your call to the number you dialed. When no one answers, the switch can redirect the call to voicemail or forward it to a different telephone number.

Your cellphone company switch has limited features like call forwarding, voicemail, and three-way calling. A PBX, your office telephone system, does much more for your business. 

Your PBX can answer a call and play a message. “Press one for sales, two for support, or three for order processing.”  Your PBX has call groups that ring several phones at the same time. It has conference bridges that allow more than three people on a call.  It can direct an incoming call first to a desk phone, then to a different desk phone, and then to a cell phone.

After business hours, or in an emergency, your PBX can change where calls go. A call to a closed office can go to an open office somewhere else.
